Using the NTU Library Online Catalog FAQ

What is a PIN?

PINs are used by NTU Library patrons in the online catalog to view their circulation records, make reservations, and renew books. Patrons can set their PINs by clicking View Your Circulation Record on the Library’s homepage.

If patrons forget their PINs or cannot view their circulation records for another reason, they must:

1. Bring their NTU faculty, staff, or student ID to the circulation desk with online access at any branch or department library to have their PINs reset. After the librarian deletes the old PIN, the patron can set a new one.

2. To protect patrons’ rights, the Library requires patrons to appear in person to have their PINs changed.

When I try to view my circulation record, why do I receive the message: “Sorry, your patron record cannot be located”?

If the system cannot show your information, it means the patron ID entered is not recognized by the system. The reason for this may be that a wrong patron ID has been entered, or that you have recently had your ID replaced. While the original patron ID has a “0” added at the end of the student number, the replaced patron ID will be denoted by a “1” at the end of the student number. (For the second replacement, the denoted number is “2”,,and so on.)

Under these circumstances, please enter your patron ID as in the following examples:

First Replacement, Student number is B90108088: Please enter B901080881 (the replacement is indicated by the 1)

New Student ,Student number is B90108008: Please enter B901080080

Faculty/Staff, National ID is A123456789: Please enter A1234567891 (for those who have not had their National IDs replaced.) Patrons who have had their National IDs replaced will have to enter 2 after their IDs (ex. A1234567892.)

If the system still shows the message “Sorry, your patron record cannot be located,” please contact the Library.

Why are some materials I look up on the online catalog shown as being located at the “Gen Lib 1F Info Desk”?

Some attachments of computer books in the form of CDs or disks are noted in the catalog as being located at the “Gen Lib 1F Info Desk” (i.e. the Circulation Desk.) Patrons may borrow these materials at the above location.

The online catalog indicates books are “Being Shelved”. What does this mean?

Books that have been returned within the past 48 hours will be shown as “Being Shelved” in the online catalog. They might be at the Circulation Desk or the Return Desk on the first floor, or in the Reshelf Area on the second or fourth floor, or already back on the shelves. You may check the shelf or ask library staff for help.

The online catalog shows the book is on the “Reserve Shelf.” Can I borrow the book?

When the location of the book is “Reserve Shelf,” it means the book is on reserve and will soon be picked up by the patron who reserved it. You may reserve this book online. If the book is not borrowed in time or when it is returned, the patron next on the reserve list will be notified to pick it up.

In the online catalog, there might be a symbol or some letters in front of a book’s call number. What do they stand for?

Symbols and letters indicate the type of material it is. Please refer to this table of common library materials:

or Ref—Reference books

(NH)—Microfiche cassettes

(AC)—Audio cassettes

(NF)—Microform cassettes

(AL)—music CDs

(SL)--Slides

(B)—Thread-bound books

(T)—Theses/Dissertations

(DD)—Computer discs

(VC)—Video Cassettes

(DO)--CD-ROMs

(VD)-- VCDs

(LM)--Maps

(ZM)—Musical scores

Why do some materials in the online catalog not have a location, call number or status?

For materials that have not yet been catalogued or are on order, the online catalog does not specify information such as location, call number or status. Materials may be placed on reserve online befor they are cataloged. Priority for cataloguing will be given to the reserved materials. The patrons will be notified to pick up the titles as soon as they are available for borrowing.
