簡述百科全書－以工圖館藏為例

欲瞭解某一主題的背景資料時，百科全書是一個很好的切入點...

　　一提到百科全書，許多人的腦海裏就會浮現出一套又厚又重的大部頭圖書。沒錯， 這就是一般人對於百科全書的第一印象。從這裏我們就可以知道，百科全書所涵蓋的 範圍是極為廣泛的，其編排通常也都採用相當容易的檢索方式，並且附有輔助索引。 而實際上，除了這類的大型百科全書之外，還有其它為數不少的中、小型百科全書。

　　如果從包含主題的多寡來區分，則可以概括為一般性的百科全書以及專科性的百 科全書。前者以大英、大美百科全書為經典之作，後者則幾乎各學科都有其代表作品。 不過，值得注意的是，有一些書雖以"Encyclopedia"為名，但實際上其性質與功用卻只 相當於一本辭典。而有些則是以"Encyclopedia"為名，但卻是一系列的叢書。讀者在使 用時，最好能夠分辨清楚。

　　我們在從事研究工作時，若想了解某一主題的背景資料，則百科全書可說是一個 相當好的切入點。經由百科全書提供的相關資訊及參考書目，讀者可以循序漸進閱讀 其它文獻，進行更深入的研究。

　　由於百科全書的編排和檢索方法都大同小異，因此本文僅介紹兩種專科性百科全 書，文後列出工圖現有與百科全書相關之館藏，以利讀者參考之用。

一、背景介紹：

　　本套百科全書由２４２位專家學者執筆，蒐羅有關能源科技以及環境方面的資 訊。根據編者所言，編輯本套百科全書的目的是希望能提供更多有關於能源生產及 利用的科技知識，並且使讀者們了解這些科技對於我們環境以及生活品質的影響。

二、檢索方式：

（一）先決定所欲尋檢的主題。
（二）再利用索引來修正主題之款目。
（三）確認款目之後，即可對照出其所在頁次。

三、編排方式：

　　（一）全書按主題分成三千多個款目，各款目依字母順序排列，自成一篇專論。
　　（二）每篇文章皆署名其作者，文後並附有參考書目，可便利讀者進行更深入的 　　　　　研究。
　　（三）第四冊後面附有索引，其內容簡介如下：
　　　1.按索引款目字母順序排列。
　　　2.各款目若分散在不同主題，則分別指明其分屬主題及所在頁次。
　　　　如：Pumps for air conditioners, 34
　　　　　　design for energy conservation, 1125-1126
　　　　　　energy management in, 1215-1216
　　　　　　此舉之好處在於可以將所有與 Pumps 有關的資訊一網打盡，避免讀 　　　　者漏失了任何相關資料。換句話說，資料的編排可以維持其整體性的架 　　　　構，而讀者則可以從Index中達到尋檢資料之完整性的要求。 　　　3.有See（見）以及See also（參見）的功能：
　　　　A see B： 表示A是不用的款目，必須用B款目。
　　　　A see also B： 表示除了A款目之外，也可以參考B款目的資料。

一、背景介紹：

　　本書旨在提供與水力有關的資訊。除了極少部份之外，全部以圖表方式呈現。與 1970年的第一版相比較，本版增加了許多更新、更有用的資料。其中，第七章的「環 境問題」是全新的章節，以反映人們對於土壤和水污染以及環境品質的自覺和關心。

二、編排方式：

　　全書分為十一章，收錄了六百多張表格(table)以及一百多張圖表(illustration)，內容 主題涵蓋：氣候、水文學、地面水、地下水、水的使用、品質、管理，以及水資源機 構、法令。第十一章是換算表(Conversion factors)，分為十二大類，各大類之下再細分 為各小類。書後同樣附有索引，也是按照字母順序排列。
