Annotated Catalogue of Astronomical and Mathematical Historical Materials in the NTU Library Collections
This publication is the result of more than ten years of research into the valuable early works on Wasan (traditional Japanese mathematics), astronomy, and geography preserved in the Mathematics Department collection from the era of Taihoku Imperial University. It offers readers an opportunity to look back on a century of mathematical research and education at NTU, while witnessing the completion of this important historical materials project. The book represents not only the collaborative efforts across multiple disciplines, but also a significant milestone for the NTU Library in promoting the revitalization of its collections and the transmission of knowledge.
作者介紹｜ Author
城地茂教授，畢業於英國倫敦大學亞非學院（SOAS），並獲得博士學位。他曾在英國劍橋大學李約瑟研究所（東亞科技史研究中心）擔任研究員，專注於日本數學史和東亞科技史的研究。其後擔任於國立高雄第一科技大學（今國立高雄科技大學）擔任教授及代理院長，後轉任大阪教育大學教授，致力於東亞數學史及文化交流的研究。城地教授的學術成就卓越，尤其以對“和算”（日本傳統數學）的研究而著名。他於2014年出版的著作《和算の再発見》（和算再發現）一書，被日本130多所大學圖書館收藏，成為研究日本數學史的重要參考資料。此外，城地教授在東亞科技史領域的貢獻也相當突出，尤其在整理和詮釋歷史數學資料方面有著深厚的造詣。
Professor Shigeru Jochi received his Ph.D. from SOAS, University of London. He previously served as a research fellow at the Needham Research Institute (the East Asian Science and Technology History Research Center) at the University of Cambridge, focusing on the history of Japanese mathematics and the history of science and technology in East Asia. He later became a professor and acting dean at National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology (now National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology), before joining Osaka Kyoiku University as a professor, where he continues to devote himself to the study of East Asian mathematical history and cultural exchange.
Professor Jochi is renowned for his outstanding academic achievements, particularly his research on Wasan (traditional Japanese mathematics). His 2014 publication Rediscovering Wasan (和算の再発見) has been collected by over 130 university libraries in Japan, becoming an important reference for the study of Japanese mathematical history. His contributions to the field of East Asian history of science and technology are also significant, especially in the organization and interpretation of historical mathematical materials.
