(Full amendment history at the end of this document)

Article 1

Purpose:

The National Taiwan University (NTU or “the University”) Library (“the Library”) formulates the NTU Library Directives Governing Study Carrel Reservations and Usage (“the Directives”) and hereby sets up study carrels to facilitate research by NTU faculty members and students.

Article 2

Eligibility:

Current NTU full-time faculty members, research fellows, postdoctoral fellows, and doctoral students may apply to reserve a carrel in accordance with the provisions herein.

Article 3

Reservations:

  1. Users may reserve a carrel online by logging into the NTU Library Space Management System.
  2. Each user may reserve one carrel at a time, and reservations may be made up to six months in advance.
  3. Two types of reservations are available, single-day reservations and multi-day reservations. Multi-day reservations are restricted to a minimum of 7 days and a maximum of 30 days (excluding closing dates).
Article 4

Terms of use

  1. Users may only use the carrel they reserve, and they may neither lend their reserved carrel to others nor exchange it with them. Offenders may immediately have their usage privileges suspended for three months by the Library.
  2. An extension can be made on a reservation three days prior to reservation expiry if the same carrel remains available. Reservations will not be accepted if the user already has a carrel in use or reserved.
  3. Users shall clear all personal belongings out of the carrels before their reservation period ends. The Library staff will remove any personal items left behind by users who fail to vacate the premises on time. The Library disclaims all responsibility for the safekeeping of any such items and may suspend offenders’ usage privileges for three months.
  4. If any equipment damage is found in a carrel at the time of check-out, the user shall indemnify the Library for the damage and may have their usage privileges suspended for three months by the Library.
  5. Users shall check into the reserved carrel by the second day of their reservation period, or the reservation will automatically be canceled.
  6. Users are required to actually use their reserved carrel on at least 50% of the days within the reservation period (excluding closing dates). Offenders of these regulations may have their usage privileges suspended for three months by the Library.
Article 5

Hours

Carrels are available for use throughout the Library’s opening hours.

Article 6

Regulations governing the use of Library materials in carrels:

  1. Users may bring Library materials which have been checked out under their account into their reserved carrel. Library materials which cannot been checked out must be returned to the shelves after use on the same day.
  2. Any materials that have not been checked out or have not been returned to the shelves will be removed from the carrel if found. In addition, a warning will be issued to the offender. Repeat offenders may immediately have their usage privileges suspended for three months by the Library.
Article 7

Supplementary provisions:

  1. Users may not engage in any activities unrelated to research in the carrels.
  2. Users are required to maintain quiet in the carrels, which shall be kept clean and tidy at all times. Users are prohibited from covering up the windowpanes on the doors or displacing any furniture/equipment in the carrels. Pursuant to the Library’s General Rules, smoking, eating, drinking, and other inappropriate behaviors are also prohibited inside the carrels. Offenders will be punished under the Library’s Regulations Governing the Handling of Patron Violations and shall immediately have their usage privileges suspended for three months.
  3. The Library disclaims all responsibility for the loss of personal items stored in the carrels.
  4. The Library staff may enter reserved carrels to perform maintenance and inspection tasks without prior notice to users, who may not refuse to cooperate.
  5. The Library may ask users to check out of their carrels whenever necessary.
  6. Users shall turn off the lights and lock the door every day when they leave their carrel.
Article 8

The Directives shall be passed by the NTU Library Committee and then implemented on the date of promulgation.
